Radio & Multimedia
Vuleka produces a range of media in addition to film and video, including radio, audio, print and multi-media projects, and also conducts research and training. Vuleka has developed and produced media around democracy and voter education since South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994, continuing through local elections, e.g. a series of radio dramas produced for the Democracy Development Programme. Vuleka’s clients include Amnesty International (London), for whom we produced a series of human rights radio campaigns in English, French, Portuguese and Swahili, the Open Society Foundation and the University of KwaZulu Natal’s Street Law
Vuleka has an background in HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns, dating back to 1995, when Vuleka researched, developed and produced the first regional radio campaign on STD and HIV awareness the South African Medical Research Council, and went on to to take the regional campaign to scale and produce the first national radio campaign in all 11 national languages for the Department of Health, funded by the European Union. Vuleka has developed, produced and flighted World AIDS Day radio campaigns for the provincial KwaZulu Natal Department of Health, and produced the first Treatment Action Campaign radio campaign aimed at raising awareness about HIV mother-to-child-transmission. Vuleka has also done work for the Southern African AIDS Information Dissemination Services (SafAIDS), producing a radio campaign targeting youth throughout southern African.
Vuleka’s training work includes the management of a two-year nation-wide community radio training initiative around HIV/AIDS and disability for the national Department of Communications, which resulted in the production of 1,000 radio programs.
One of Vuleka’s largest scale multi-media projects was for a major national campaign against violence against women, for the United Nations body, UNIFEM, which included a national billboard and radio campaign as well as facilitating media training for South Africa’s National Network on Violence Against Women.
Vuleka produces public service announcements (PSAs) for radio, e.g. for Epilepsy South Africa, featuring SA musician Vusi Mahlasela speaking about his own epilepsy, and has produced radio campaigns for the South African Human Rights Commission, the Department of Social Welfare (for the first national Child Support Grant), the Department of Land Affairs and various other government departments. Vuleka produces audio as well as radio, e.g. an innovative guide on CD and audio-tape for Tourism KwaZulu-Natal aimed at the emerging tourism market.
Vuleka’s background in radio drama includes a co-production with the BBC Africa Service, recording the winning play in its annual radio drama competition for broadcast throughout the African continent. Vuleka has undertaken a range of multi-media work around history, especially Oral History, e.g. a long-term research project on the oral history of the Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu (INK) area of eThekwini Municipality (Durban) for the INK Heritage Centre.
Vuleka’s research and writing work includes conducting research into gender, advertising and broadcasting for the national Commission on Gender Equality, with a case study on the anti-rape campaign featuring actress Charlize Theron. Vuleka’s Julie Frederikse and Madoda Ncayiyana co-authored a book published by Heinemann, Careers in Media, which is distributed throughout Africa.
